Melody Tourigny has been a Constable with the O.P.P. for almost 20 years now. She is posted at Nottawasaga OPP Detachment within Central Region. Melody’s current position is the Community Service and Media Relations Officer where her primary duties include awareness and training the community that she serves. Her audiences include students of all ages, parental groups, educational institutions, Business Associations, residential sectors, senior groups, neighbourhood watch groups and fellow colleagues. Her lessons and presentations provide advice and guidance on security related issues utilizing CPTED principles. She has given CPTED presentations to various business associations to educate them with techniques to prevent further victimization and liaises on a regular basis with the community on security issues as part of her duties. She further educates local business associations on robbery prevention, using the O.P.P.’s new 2008 Robbery Prevention Kit which is based on C.P.T.E.D. principles.
Melody’s position as Community Service and Media Relations Officer is based on teamwork and community partnerships. She has built solid relationships with the Simcoe County District School Board members, Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit, The Mayors and Counsellors of each of the Townships policed by her detachment, The Police Services Board, local Politicians Community Policing Committees, Substance Abuse Groups, (Think Clear, OCCID, M.A.D.D.) and a number of other crime prevention organizations – (C.P.T.E.D., Child Find Ontario, Road Watch,) and a wide variety of media sources (print/ radio/ t.v.) to promote crime prevention tactics.
Her experience with CPTED assessments and evaluations has ranged from outdoor venues (parks) to indoor (homes and township administrative offices – security) to blueprints of upcoming subdivisions still in the planning stages.
